Community Action Team (CAT)

What is Trap Neuter Return?
Trap Neuter Return (TNR) or Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR)
There are approximately 60 million feral cats in the United States. TNR seeks to reduce the number of feral, stray, outdoor community cats while improving their quality of life. After a community cat has been spayed or neutered and vaccinated, it is returned to the original colony where it can live out a full, healthy, non-reproductive life. TNR is endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association. TNR is the least costly as well as the most efficient and humane way of stabilizing and ultimately reducing the feral and outdoor cat population. TNR stops the cycle of reproduction as well as reduces undesirable behaviors, such as yowling, fighting and spraying, which also reduces the number of complaint calls made to Animal Control and the number of healthy feral cats euthanized.

SNAP is a low cost spay and neuter clinic located at 6177 Fred W Moore Hwy, China Township, MI, 48054. To borrow a trap or schedule a surgery, please call SNAP directly at 810-329-7627. Leave a message and they WILL call you back. While there is often a waiting list to get scheduled, polite persistence is rewarded.

SNAP offers same day drop off and pick up. No class is required to utilize SNAP's spay and neuter services. Mention you are from Sanilac County and the cost of the surgery will be covered by the Thumb Spay Neuter Alliance
All About Animals
Flint & Warren Locations
All About Animals is a low cost spay and neuter surgery center with two locations in Flint and Warren.
The Thumb Spay Neuter Alliance will cover the cost of any Sanilac County outdoor cat surgery once you take the one hour online class on best practices for Trap Neuter Return. The class is free once a month. It is also available on demand online anytime for $10. See All About Animals website for more information under TNR Training Workshops.
Once class is completed, you will receive an ID number from AAA. Make your AAA surgery appointments, then contact us here for credits to be placed in your name at All About Animals.

TNR Best Practice Tips
Trap Covers
When cats are in live traps ALWAYS keep them covered. This helps keep them calm.
Spay Females First
To stay ahead of new litters, always spay females first due to limited surgery spots.
Trap Training
Feeding cats before the spay neuter appointment in a secured, zip tied open trap that can't close is the best way to prepare to trap the outdoor cat before surgery day. See video above.
Coordinate FIRST
Book your TNR surgery first before setting any live traps. Sometimes it takes weeks to get a surgery appointment. In the meantime set a feeding routine through Trap Training as you work up to appointment day (see video). For difficult to catch cats it may help to withhold 1-2 meals (always provide water) prior to surgery day to entice the cat into the trap. Alert neighbors so they don't inadvertently feed the cats or disrupt the traps.
Kitten Spay / Neuter
Healthy cats weighing 2 lbs or more (and are 8 weeks or older) can be spayed / neutered.
Spay the MOM
Did you know mother cats can get pregnant 2-4 weeks after giving birth, even while they are still nursing? For safest outcome for kittens, spay the mother when the kittens are eating food on their own. This is typically 6-8 weeks after the litter is born. Mother should NOT return to kittens for nursing at this point due to her incisions.
